Estimates that a Canadian political endorsement of ballistic missile defence (BMD) could yield billions of dollars worth of work for Canadian high-tech firms in the coming years and decades are just that, very rough estimates – rough estimates tending toward wishful thinking. It is common for BMD industrial benefit estimates to be based on Canadian industrial participation in the US-anchored joint strike fighter aircraft project (JSF) that Canada along with several other countries has joined, but the closer one looks at the JSF model, the more suspect the promise of industrial riches from BMD becomes.
