DESCRIPTION:Ploughshares Executive Director Cesar Jaramillo will participat
 e in an online event\, hosted by the International Network on Explosive We
 apons (INEW) and Control Arms\, on the transfer and use of explosive weapo
 ns in the Gaza war.\nA grim milestone in the Gaza-Israel war recently reac
 hed a reported 28\,000 civilian deaths - most of these casualties are wome
 n and children. The UN Secretary-General described the scale of civilian k
 illings as “heartbreaking and utterly unacceptable” – yet the crisis
  continues to escalate.\nThe preventable human tragedy unfolding in Gaza r
 eveals the devastating toll civilians face in conflicts around the world\,
  particularly when explosive weapons are used in populated areas with deva
 stating effect.\nJust over a year on from the endorsement of the Political
  Declaration on Strengthening the Protection of Civilians arising from the
  Use of Explosive Weapons in Populated Areas\, by 83 states in Dublin\, Ir
 eland in November 2022\, realizing the Declaration’s goals of better pro
 tecting civilians in armed conflict and strengthening compliance with inte
 rnational humanitarian law (IHL) has never been more important.\nThe Inter
 national Network on Explosive Weapons (INEW) and the Control Arms Coalitio
 n will jointly host an online panel discussion on the ongoing humanitarian
  crisis in Gaza.\nThe event will examine the civilian harm from the extens
 ive use of explosive weapons in populated areas (EWIPA) and the consequenc
 es of arms transfers within applicable legal and normative frameworks. The
  event will be held in English.
