Project Ploughshares Urges Canadian Government to Support UN Resolutions on Nuclear Disarmament

Tasneem Jamal

Letter on UN Nuclear Resolutions L9 and L21.

31 October 2007

Dear Minister Bernier and Ambassador Grinius,

I am writing on behalf of Project Ploughshares, the ecumenical peace research centre of The Canadian Council of Churches, to ask that the Government of Canada support the Resolutions L9 and L21 in upcoming votes at the United Nations First Committee and General Assembly.

These Resolutions, respectively named “Towards a nuclear-weapon-free world: accelerating the implementation of nuclear disarmament commitments,” and “Decreasing the operational readiness of nuclear weapons systems,” support key steps in the process of nuclear disarmament, a goal to which Canada is committed.

As a well-established leader of research and analysis on nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, Project Ploughshares appreciates the importance that the Government of Canada attributes to these issues.
