While the 2006 daily news often focused on wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the overall trend of major armed conflict in the world continued downward as there were three fewer armed conflicts and two fewer states involved in war than in 2005. The 2006 total of 29 armed conflicts* is the lowest recorded since Ploughshares began tracking armed conflicts in 1987. Although 2006 saw one armed conflict added when Israel and Lebanon (Hezbollah) engaged in a bloody 34-day war that resulted in over 1,000 direct deaths, other armed conflicts ended in Angola-Cabinda, Serbia and Montenegro, and Indonesia.
